BACH FESTIVAL (BRANCH)--Marina Demina, Chair Southern California Junior Bach Festival (www.scjbf.org) gives students an opportunity to perform works from the Baroque period in an adjudicated formal setting. A maximum of 35 percent of students who perform works by J.S. Bach (with the exception of Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook pieces) may be selected to represent MTAC-WLA at the Southern California Junior Bach Region IV Festival.
CHOPIN PIANO COMPETITION--Deborah H. How & Louisa Wong, Co-Chairs Kathryn Gawartin Chopin Piano Competition gives gifted and talented piano students from all Branches of MTAC an opportunity to compete for cash prize awards.
CLASSICAL & ROMANTIC FESTIVAL--Kathleen Summerland & Beth Marquardt, Co-Chairs gives students an opportunity to perform solo and ensemble music from these two historical periods in a formal recital setting. All performing students will be presented with a participation award.
CON BRIO NEWSLETTER--Heather Schmidt, Editor is published bi-monthly, September through June, and transmitted to Branch members via e-mail. Information must be received by the Editor, preferably by e-mail, on or before the 15th of the month prior to publication.
CONCERTO COMPETITION--Deborah H. How, Chair Westside Music Foundation (www.westsidemusicfoundation.org) Robert Turner Piano Concerto Competition gives gifted and talented piano students an opportunity to perform a movement of a pre-selected piano concerto with the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra (www.ladso.org).
CONTEMPORARY FESTIVAL-- Ming Tsu, Chair gives students an opportunity to perform solo and ensemble music from the 20th and 21st centuries in a formal recital setting. All performing students are presented with a participation award. The festival also features a lecture, demonstration, and/or recital by a guest artist or ensemble.
MUSICALES FOR ADULT STUDENTS (Avocational)--Barbara Roe & Natalie Dalschaert , Co-Chairs provide a warm and informal setting in which adult students may become acquainted and gain confidence by performing for their peers and teachers.
MUSIC STUDENTS’ SERVICE LEAGUE (MSSL)--Nancy Arnold, Chair is a group of self-governing MTAC student volunteers dedicated to serving their community through music. MTAC-WLA MSSL projects include student performances at senior citizen homes, benefit recitals, mentoring younger students, and volunteering at Branch functions and events. MTAC-WLA MSSL often works jointly with the Westside Music Foundation to raise funds for music education programs in the local community for at-risk children and youths.
RED & GOLD SEAL SOLO RECITALS--Nannette Kliger, Chair give students an opportunity to perform memorized programs for an audience. “Red Seal” Certificates are presented to students who prepare a 15-minute program, and “Gold Seal Certificates” are presented to students who prepare a 30-minute program. The audience must include two MTAC-WLA Branch members in addition to the presenting teacher.
SOLO COMPETITION--Deborah H. How & Louisa Wong, Co-Chairs Alice Frazier Kitchen Memorial Scholarship Competition gives gifted and talented students (all instruments and voice) from MTAC-WLA an opportunity to compete for cash scholarship awards. Winners are presented in recital at the MTAC-WLA June General Meeting.
STUDENT BRANCH RECITAL--Anders Martinson, Chair
gives students an opportunity to perform solo and
ensemble music in a formal recital setting. TEACHERS ON STAGE PREVIEW RECITAL--Sylvie Ollivier, Chair gives Branch members an opportunity to perform in a formal recital setting at the April General Meeting.
TEACHERS’ ROUND TABLES--Barbara Roe & Nannette Kliger, Co-Chairs provide a forum for Branch members to discuss pedagogical standards, issues, and practices.
TEACHERS’ WORKS-IN-PROGRESS CLASSES--Sylvie Ollivier, Chair give Branch members an opportunity to perform, share, and discuss repertoire in an informal studio setting.
WESTSIDE MUSIC FOUNDATION (WMF)--Deborah H. How, President is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public benefit charity that promotes musical culture and the pursuit of excellence in the field of music education in the West Los Angeles community for people of all socio-economic backgrounds. WMF works with various non-profit organizations, including MTAC-WLA, to provide educational opportunities to the public, with a particular emphasis on youth programs, to promote the importance of music, and to help others develop appreciation, understanding, skill, and proficiency in music through music education. Our goal is to provide high-quality musical education opportunities, particularly to youth who otherwise do not have access to to top-caliber teachers and musicians as mentors due to financial means or lack of exposure due to socio-economic background. WMF also strives to offer inclusive musical learning environments, educational workshops, and concert programming for students with special needs in the West Los Angeles area.
YOUNG ARTIST GUILD (YAG) RECITALS
YOUNG COMPOSERS GUILD (YCG) CONCERTS showcase the most talented Certificate of Merit™ and Composers Today students from the State. All performers are five-year members of the prestigious semi-professional MTAC State Young Artist Guild, Young Composers Guild, or Young Film Scorers Guild. [There are no YAG, YCG, or YFSG events scheduled in MTAC-WLA for 2011–2012.]
